News Provenance Project (NPP)

The News Provenance Project seeks to diminish the spread of misinformation by empowering readers to make more informed, confident judgments about the news they see online.

As an R&D team, we aim to add to the efforts of a growing pool of researchers, academics and technologists working to address information disorder by looking at what publishers can do from a product standpoint. To begin, we have been experimenting with how news outlets can publish photojournalism with metadata persistently attached, displayed so users can quickly understand it. Our research phase has combined prototyping a blockchain-based system for sharing metadata with user experience research to uncover the types of information and signals users need and want.
