Captionol is a lightweight web tool that generates subtitles in Belarusian. It works with short videos (TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Reels). Users can review the transcript, edit the text and timing, and download the subtitles as a separate file.
According to UNESCO, Belarusian is classified as a vulnerable language — meaning it faces a real risk of disappearing. Existing AI models still struggle with it due to the lack of high-quality training data.
To address this, Captionol selected an open-source speech recognition model and fine-tuned it specifically for Belarusian. Another challenge was “trasianka” — a mix of Belarusian and Russian that often appeared in the source videos.
