Ethical Tech Collective

To address ethics and social responsibility in technology, we believe it is important to honor the expertise of many disciplines: anthropology, computer science, critical race and gender studies, data science, design, history, human rights, law, philosophy, political science, science technology & society studies, sociology, and so much more.

We are a collective of experts with deep experiences that span private sector, public sector, and academia, committed to helping build better technology for society. We believe in the importance of experiences ranging from lived experiences to industry training to deep academic studies. We bring different and complementary lenses to interrogating technology's impact on society. Get in touch with any person individually, or send us all a message. We began convening as the Ethical Tech Working Group at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center, founded and co-led by Kathy Pham and Mary Gray. We experienced the deep value of a community of trust and expertise across a broad range of disciplines. We paired historical context with inside tech industry experience; we discussed race and gender in all technology conversations; we interrogated how and if human rights principals were the right framing for technology products; we dived into practical solutions for engineering and product teams; we analyzed the nuances or regulation; and so much more. Our conversations were enriched by deep expertise in the room, with respect for all disciplines as equals, and deep academic studies, research, and practical experience with tech. We hosted an Honoring All Expertise talk to highlight some of the work.
